Famous Words in History
Amendment II of the
United States Constitution:
"A well regulated Militia, being
necessary to the security of a free State,
the right of the people to keep and
bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
"They that can
give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety,
deserve neither liberty nor safety."
Benjamin Franklin, 1759
"Firearms stand next in importance to the
constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth
and keystone under independence. From the hour the Pilgrims
landed, to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies
prove that to ensure peace, security, and happiness, the rifle
and pistol are equally indispensable. The very atmosphere of
firearms everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a
place of honor with all that's good."
George Washington, First President of the United States
From a speech to
Congress, January 7, 1790
"And what country can
preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to
time, that this people preserves the spirit of resistance? Let
them take arms. ... The tree of liberty must be refreshed from
time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
Thomas Jefferson, Author of the Declaration of Independence
and
President of the United States
"The strongest reason for the
people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last
resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in
government."
Thomas Jefferson
"The constitutions of most of
our States assert that all power is inherent in the people;
that... it is their right and duty to be at all times
armed."
Thomas Jefferson to John Cartwright, 1824
Gun Control Advocate
"The most foolish mistake we
could possibly make would be to allow the subjected people to
carry arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed
their subjected peoples to carry arms have prepared their own
fall."
Adolf Hitler, Edict of March 18, 1938
